In Memory of Angela Firman - Editor
Angela was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer at 33 and then Stage IV/metastatic breast cancer at 37. She wrote of the moment she stumbled across Wildfire. “Even though it was the middle of the day, the room was dark and still. Sun peeked through the edges of the blinds landing on my15-month-old son’s tufts of baby hair. As he slept in my arms, I read the stories of young women facing the same challenges I was. The explosion in my heart signified long-awaited recognition that turned into life-affirming community in the months that followed.”
Angela was an avid reader, a closet-cross-stitcher, and a fervent writer. She was a teacher and school leader for 11 years and then devoted many years after her own diagnosis to amplifying voices that have been historically suppressed in the world of publishing. In addition to copyediting Wildfire, she was an Associate Editor for Yellow Arrow Publishing, and her creative nonfiction writing has been published in Open Minds Quarterly, You Might Need To Hear This, and Press Pause. She was also proud to serve on the board of The Pink Boat Regatta — a local sailboat race and community dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research.
Angela lived in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and two children. She passed away from metastatic breast cancer in September of 2025. Her heart and editorial eye live on in the pages of Wildfire.
