Be bold. Be beautiful. Be confident. with Hannah Morales

Hannah was diagnosed at 34 with Stage III, triple positive breast cancer. She faced her breast cancer diagnosis with unflinching honesty and a fierce love for her family. Hannah lives in Southwest, Kansas, with her husband and three children.

Hannah reads her essay, “Be bold. Be beautiful. Be confident,” from the 2025 Body issue of Wildfire Journal. Her essay is a vivid account of the days surrounding her mastectomy and the moment she first saw her changed body in the mirror. Expecting grief and resentment, she instead discovered pride, relief, and a deeper sense of identity that extended beyond appearance.

Be bold. Be beautiful. Be confident.

Hannah expected to meet grief in the mirror. Instead, she found pride.

When Hannah Morales was diagnosed at 34 with Stage III triple positive breast cancer, she expected that seeing her body after her single mastectomy would fill her with anger and grief.

Instead, she found something she never expected.

"Looking in the mirror, my body looked different, but the person looking back at me was still me."

In this deeply personal essay, Hannah reflects on the pressure to look "normal," the vulnerability of seeing her changed body for the first time, and the powerful realization that her scars tell a story of strength rather than loss.

As the mother of a teenage daughter, Hannah's experience also became a lesson in living the words she had always hoped to teach:

"Beauty comes from within. And confidence? That’s something no one and nothing, including cancer, can take away from me."

This episode is an invitation to reconsider what beauty, confidence, and resilience can look like after cancer.

Writing Prompts Inspired by Today’s Episode

Set your timer for eight minutes, write without stopping or editing yourself. There is magic in leaning into that time. The prompt is:

Meeting my changed body…

In this episode of The Burn, Hannah describes expecting grief when she first saw her post-surgical body, but instead feeling pride. A moment of reckoning became a moment of recognition.

I invite you to write about the first moment you truly saw or understood your changed body after illness, treatment, surgery, or trauma. Put yourself fully in that scene. Where were you? What did you expect to feel, and what did you actually feel? What story about yourself, your body, or your experience were you rewriting in that moment?

If you find that you write best with a good prompt, check out our free prompts and learn about our writing workshops.

Happy writing! Until next time, take good care.
