Rosé-Colored Glasses with Susan Danenberger

Susan Danenberger was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer at 48, and again at 50 with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer (MBC). A fifth-generation farmer and winemaker, she owns Danenberger Family Vineyards in Central Illinois.

Susan reads her essay, “Rosé-Colored Glasses,” from the 2025 Body issue of Wildfire Journal. Her piece draws us into a deeply personal story of body image, beauty, and transformation after breast cancer—one that begins with stilettos and selfies, and unfolds into a powerful journey of reckoning and rebuilding.

Rosé-Colored Glasses

She thought she could out-style cancer.

At 48, Susan Danenberger was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer. At 50, she was living with metastatic breast cancer. In between, she held tightly to the version of herself she knew—heels, fashion, beauty, control.

“I did not want my life or my body to change.”

Unaware of the seriousness, she made radiation into a fun self-challenge called "Rock-On Radiation." A different pair of stilettos for every treatment. A way to keep fear at arm’s length. A way to stay herself.

But survivorship had other plans.

What happens when the body you built your identity around no longer feels like yours? When reconstruction doesn’t restore what was lost? When confidence slips quietly, then all at once?

This is a story about that unraveling—and the slow, deliberate act of reclaiming.

Not the old self. Something more honest.

Writing Prompt Inspired by Today’s Episode

Set your timer for eight minutes, write without stopping or editing yourself. There is magic in leaning into that time. The prompt comes straight from today’s story:

I saw myself through others' eyes. They saw a strong, beautiful woman. I saw a weak, ugly one.

I invite you to write about a time when someone else's perception of you didn't match your own.

What did they see in you that you couldn’t see? What do you wish they had understood about that gap? What’s changed since then? What does your strength look like now, and where does your beauty live?

If you find that you write best with a good prompt, check out our free prompts and learn about our writing workshops.

Happy writing! Until next time, take good care.
